Unlike other awards-show with a vacant hosting position, the Grammys didn’t follow suit and have found their host! Today (January 15th), singer-songwriter and activist, Alicia Keys announced that she will be hosting the music industry’s biggest night. She shared their exciting news via a video on her YouTube channel.
Throughout the video, A.Keys is seen spreading the good news about her new gig with her mom, husband Swizz Beatz, and her two sons -- Egypt and Genesis. The clip also follows her as she shoots her promo for the show concluding with why she is so excited to accept the job. Keys goes on to say:
“I know what it feels like to be on that stage, and I know what it feels like to be proud of the work that you’ve put in, and to be recognized for it. I just feel grateful that I’m able to bring that light and that energy. This is a first – it’s a first, and it’s amazing, and I think it’s perfect timing. Honestly, I’m really excited, I feel really good about it, because I feel like it’s the perfect opportunity for me to give the light back, lift people up, especially all the young women that are nominated.”
The Recording Academy has broken James Corden’s two year hosting streak by picking their surprising choice for the 2019 Grammys. Their selection of Keys comes after last year’s mention to press by the president, Neil Portnow, that women needed to “step up” to see more representation in both the broadcast and in nominations. The 2019 awards include a notably larger number of female nominees this year and Keys becomes part of the solution!
So to “step up” the award show, the academy hired the 15-time Grammy-winning woman to be the face of this year’s show which has more women - especially women of color who have been nominated for major categories. Over the course of her career she’s won numerous Grammys, her most recent trophy being, Best R&B Album for Girl on Fire, in 2014. In 2002, she famously won Best New Artist while her breakout hit “Fallin'” picked up three awards, including Song of the Year.
This year is promised to be a big show. Kendrick Lamar is leading the nominations with eight nods recognizing his work for the “Black Panther” soundtrack, including the hit song “All the Stars” with songstress SZA. Drake is following right behind with seven nominations, and producer Boi-1da and Americana singer Brandi Carlile are right on their tails with six apiece. Drake, Lamar, and Carlile all nabbed top nominations for record, song, and album of the year. Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino, Maren Morris, R&B newcomer H.E.R., and producer Sounwave each notched five noms. Cardi B’s “Invasion of Privacy,” H.E.R.’s self-titled album, Post Malone’s “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” Janelle Monáe’s “Dirty Computer,” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Golden Hour” round out the category for Album of the Year.
The 61st Annual Grammy Awards are set to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as Alicia Keys graces the stage while she hosts. The award ceremony will air live on CBS February 10th at 8 PM ET.
