Missy Elliott Is The First Female Rapper To Be Nominated For The Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Updated: Nov 13, 2018

Virginia-bred rapper Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott is finally receiving the recognition she deserves. As apart of its Class of 2019, Missy becomes the first female rapper to be nominated for the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Missy is joined by Mariah Carey, Monica, Dean Dillon, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill, the Beach Boys’ Mike Love, Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Lloyd Price, Tommy James and the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart) as performing nominees. There are many deserving writers nominated, but unfortunately only six songwriters or songwriting groups will be enlisted. The “I’m Better” rapper has had an enormous influence on both the sound and style of Hip-Hop and R&B that we hear and see today. For over two decades, she has excelled through her solo work including a fleet of timeless charting hits with songs like “The Rain,” “Work It,” “Lose Control” and “Get Ur Freak On” under her belt. Also including her penned collaborations with the late Aaliyah, legendary Whitney Houston, Ginuwine, Timbaland, Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, SWV, Total, Tweet and the list goes on. Some of the chart topping singles she helped pen in the past are Monica’s “So Gone,” which was a No. 1 R&B hit that charted in the Top 10 of the Hot 100, the No. 4-charting 702 hit “Where My Girls At,” and the star-studded “Lady Marmalade” cover featuring Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, and Pink. In recent years Missy has kept a low profile since her last album back in 2005. Now a days she will occasionally drop a single accompanied by a mesmerizing visual or make a featured appearance on another artist’s single and then go ghost for an extensive period of time. Not for much longer though... fans will soon be able to hear more new original material. Just last month in response to the Recording Academy via Twitter, Missy announced that she is working on her first album in thirteen years. Elliott’s influence has opened doors and inspired other female emcees through their musical journey. To be qualified, an artist has to have written music for over 20 years and since the 90s, Missy has been a force to be reckoned with. If inducted, Missy will share the honor with former inductees Jay-Z (June 2017) and Jermaine Dupri (June 2018) as the only rappers to receive this achievement. Voters are able to elect three non-performing songwriters and three performing songwriters until December 17. The 50th annual Induction and Awards Gala is one of the most unique awards ceremonies in the music industry and will take place on June 13, 2019, in New York City. A huge good luck and congratulations to Missy Elliott on this achievement! Check out her humbling flex below.
