Ariana Grande’s newly-released “Thank U, Next” music video became an overnight sensation after it’s release at noon on Friday (November 30th). Within its first 22 hours of release, the female-led video shattered YouTube’s all-time record for most views in the first 24 hours of its premiere. At the peak of its release, there were 829,000 viewers watching simultaneously. The initial spike caused a delay in the comments on YouTube due to the high traffic while also setting another record of over 516,000 chat messages sent from fans during the video’s debut. By noon on Saturday morning, the Hannah Lux Davis-directed video accumulated 50 million views surpassing K-Pop supergroup BTS previous record back in August of 45.9 million views for their single “Idol” featuring Nicki Minaj.
The video pays homage to female-driven movies from the early 2000s such as Mean Girls, Bring it On, 13 Going On 30, and Legally Blonde. The music video is saturated with references from those classic films and it features cameos by “Mean Girls” actors Jonathan Bennett and Stefanie Drummond. Also a cameo of kris Jenner as the over the top dancing mom recording the performance on a camcorder. There are additional appearances by “Legally Blonde’s” Jennifer Coolidge, YouTube influencers Colleen Ballinger and Gabe DeMartino, singer Troye Sivan, and “Thank U,Next” co-songwriters Tayla Part and Victoria Monet.
Not only does the video make iconic references, the song also references, Ariana’s recent break up with SNL cast member Pete Davidson, along with her previous relationships with Big Sean, Mac Miller, and Ricky Alvarez. Keeping up the momentum of wins with this music video, it also earned Ariana Grande her first No.1 record on the Billboard Hot 100!
